Autism Insurance Reform State Initiatives:
In many states, insurers explicitly exclude coverage of medically necessary, evidence-based autism therapies from policies, which places a significant financial burden on families seeking to provide their children with necessary services. Fifteen states – Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin –have enacted autism insurance reform bills. Nearly thirty state legislatures were introduced bills in 2009 and eighteen states have endorsed bills so far in 2010.
