President Elect Barack Obama on Autism: "A new dawn of American leadership is at hand"

(November 5, 2008) President Elect Barack Obama's win last night may prove to be a win for the autism community as well.  In his campaign statement on Autism Spectrum Disorders, Obama has committed to bringing autism insurance reform to our entire nation.

His statement reads, Obama and Biden "will mandate insurance coverage of autism treatment and will also continue to work with parents, physicians, providers, researchers, and schools to create opportunities and effective solutions for people with ASD."

I am a single mom in Texas with a 12 year old son that still would benefit from ABA therapy. I don't understand why insurance will only cover children through age 5 or 6 years old. His school is using the ABLLS curiculum. I have seen some progress. The funding has been cut dramatically this year. The teacher doesn't have enough qualified help to implement the program. This is sad because my son didn't get what he needed when he was younger.

I have a daughter with PDD NOS. Would we be discussing this in such detail if this were an affliction that was less controversial in the eyes of the medical community? Our loved ones with ASD deserve the same rights to coverage as those with any other affliction. I urge you to get invloved with your represetatives in government and demand action. We should not sit on the sidelines as victims as our loved ones struggle. We must fight now for them and for the future afflicted. It is a torch I am proud to carry for my daughter and I suspect that many of you would be proud to carry that torch as well. Don't read this and cast it aside with an excuse that holds no weight against this pressing issue and invaluable opportunity we all have to change the lives of many. Organize with each other and let us carry one proud, strong voice to our leaders that we demand more. The impact of one voice may be small, but the impact of an entire communities voice is immeasurable.

Our son has autism as well, we are retired military and see that they only offer help mainly for active duty, reserves and Guard. My husband did 20 yrs and its sad it doesn't list retired military! For parents doing the GF/CF diet it would be nice to have some type of vouchers issued to help with the cost of the special foods for the diet. We are new to the diet and soon will be seeing a DAN Dr. and I am so afraid of the costs we will come upon, but since the diet we have seen ALOT of improvements so we have to stick with it. Hopefully soon I will hear our 20 month old son say "I love you mommy and daddy"

We have two grandchildren with autism and the program they need (ABA) in Missouri would cost $2000 a month for each and is not covered with insurance. So we heartily concur with President-elect Obama's stand on insurance being available for this type of handicap. Not only are the doctor fees quite large, but special diets and prescriptions are not covered in their state. For the average family, this can be a really huge financial problem.
