As we mark Pearl Harbor Day, the autism community should remind Congress of the injustice our military families face in accessing care for their dependents with autism. Under the military's TRICARE program, service members LOSE their coverage for autism treatments once they leave active duty. For example, a U.S. Marine wounded in Iraq was told his son diagnosed with autism no longer qualified for benefits because the Marine had been medically retired from the service. Congressmen John Larson (D-CT) and Walter Jones (R-NC) introduced legislation (HR.2288) last summer to right this wrong by enabling all service members, regardless of their duty status, to get the benefits our country owes them. But so far, only 21 of the other 433 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed on as co-sponsors to the bill, called the Caring for Military Kids with Autism Act. No one has introduced a companion bill in the Senate. Where does your U.S. Representative stand on the Caring for Military Kids with Autism Act? If they have signed on as a co-sponsor, thank them today for supporting our military families. If they have yet to co-sponsor the bill, urge them to learn about this issue, sign on to the bill and help move it through Congress. We get you started, but please take a few minutes to personalize your message and let Congress know why all military families deserve the best care our country can provide. They deserve no less!
